RENEW

Developed by the University of New Hampshire, RENEW (Rehabilitation, Empowerment, Natural Supports, Education, and Work) is a unique application of the wraparound process designed for older, transition-aged youth, who are at the greatest risk of alternative placement and school dropout.  RENEW focuses specifically on increasing effective school engagement, employment, and post-secondary education and completion for older, transition-aged youth, who have experienced the most system failure over time.  RENEW has shown success in reducing school dropout and school push out while increasing high school participation and completion for high school students with emotional and behavioral challenges. (Malloy, Sundar, Hagner, Pieras, & Viet, 2010*).

Four Illinois PBIS Network districts are being supported by the Illinois Statewide Technical Assistance Center (ISTAC) as Educational Environment (EE) Demonstration sites to diminish “school push out” practices.  These districts, Alton CUSD 11, Kankakee SD 111, SD U-46, and Waukegan CUSD 60, have been trained and are implementing RENEW.

Included below are some helpful resources on the RENEW process:

One resource is a PowerPoint and associated documents regarding RENEW and the Secondary Transition Connection: How a Tier 3 Intervention Informs Planning and Services for Successful Adult Life Outcomes

During this webinar secondary transition for students with disabilities is defined and the basic IDEA legal requirements are reviewed and discussed in comparison to RENEW goals.  The connection between transition plans and RENEW maps is discussed and demonstrated using one student’s maps.  Viewers learn how the RENEW process can help schools meet the IDEA requirement for a “student-driven” transition plan and how the IEP/transition plan can serve as a platform to include customized options for education, employment and linkages to long-term supports for adult life success.

The attachments in the "Transitions" section are from the requests we received during the webinar.

The Students Leading the Way PPT is a mini training that can be used with students to discuss “the IEP and me”  and includes information about what an IEP is, why students might need one, what is in an IEP, how it is developed and other basic information important for students to know.

The Self-Directed IEP 10 Step Guide can be used by students to lead their IEP meeting.  The format could be printed or saved for a student to fill in and personalize for presentation at his/her IEP meeting.

The Age-Appropriate Transition Assessment includes a definition and background information about age-appropriate transition assessments.  A number of links to tools and resources are included.
