Universal Screening Identifies Fewer Youth At-Risk

Aurora East USD 131 built district-level capacity for Check-in Check-out (CICO) over the last three years to support students who are identified earlier for interventions. The number of schools implementing CICO, as well as the percentage of students accessing this intervention, has increased from nine schools with 3.8% of students in 2008-09, to twelve schools with 7.5% of students in 2010-11. To identify students in need of support the district invested in universal screening, a critical component of response to intervention (RtI), in nine Aurora East schools over the last four years. The total district screening data shows an overall decrease in students identified as at-risk for externalizing behaviors, from 4.3% in 2008-09 to 3.1% in 2010-11, and as at-risk for internalizing behaviors, from 2.9% to 1.4% for the same period. The graph represents a sample of schools with both universal screening and CICO data, illustrating the effect of universal screening on the percentage of students accessing simple Tier 2 interventions.
