Reduction in Number of Students Identified As At Risk of Developing Behavioral Problems

Glenbrook Elementary School (SD U-46), a participant in the SWPBS Advanced Tiers Model Demonstration, began implementing universal screening in 2009-10. As of 2011- 12, office discipline referrals (ODRs)/per 100 students/per day was down 45% (from 0.53 ODR/100/day in 2009-10 to 0.29 ODR/100 students/day in 2011-12). The percentage of students, overall, who were identified via universal screening also decreased significantly from 12% of students enrolled in grades screened in 2009-10 to 4.8% of students in grades screened in 2011-12. There was also a marked decline in the percentage of students identified as at risk of developing externalizing behavioral problems (from 6.5% of students enrolled in grades screened in 2009-10, to 1.6% in 2011-12). Establishment of an effective, proactive universal screening system, combined with fidelity installation of Tier 2 systems and practices as documented by scores on the Individual Student System Evaluation Tool (ISSET), most likely contributed to the reduction in the number of students identified as at risk of developing internalizing, or externalizing behavioral problems.
